The Boden Standard

Family headless guitar photo boden

What makes it special?

The Boden Standard was developed to provide great majority of the premium features found on such models as the Original, Prog, and Fusion but with a solid American Basswood body, Quilted or Flame Maple veneers on a solid 5 mm Maple top and our own specially designed pickups. The result is a lineup of guitars that provides all of the distinctive characteristics and key features that the Boden guitars are known for at a superb value for the working musician. All Standard models feature Roasted Maple necks and fretboards with the EndurNeck profile, Luminlay face and side dots, Jescar stainless steel frets and the innovative .strandberg* hardware as on all of our guitars.

What does it do?

The combination of Basswood with a solid Maple top and Maple neck/fretboard is considered the “Holy Grail” of electric guitar wood combinations by many top guitar builders and artists alike, producing an ideal balance between warmth, punch, brilliance and sustain for an extremely well-rounded sound that’ll excel at virtually any musical genre or playing style. Our pickups were custom designed and wound to our specifications to bring out the best acoustic properties of the woods and hardware for a very balanced and rich sound through any amplification system.

Who is it for?

The Standard models are for players who do not require high-end features such as chambered body, 4-A grade figured top/fretboard, and name brand pickups but require the same premium look, sound and features that provide the performance they need as well as long-lasting value. Like our Classic models, the solidbody construction offers a different type of feel and sound than the chambered-body guitars but still delivers the trademark .strandberg* clarity, articulation, sustain, and warm woody character that our guitars have become known for.

The Boden Standard Series guitars were developed to provide the same key features that our guitars are acclaimed for but with solidbody construction, our own design pickups, and figured Maple top veneers to reduce costs and offer a line that delivers outstanding value as well as top flight performance. The solidbody has a distinctively different kind of sound and response than the chambered body and it isn’t better or worse: just different and a matter of personal preference.

The body consists of solid American Basswood with quarter-inch Maple top capped with either Flame or Quilted Maple for a balanced and punchy tone that is superbly complemented by the roasted Maple neck and fretboard. One of the classic wood combinations espoused by top custom guitar builders and world class artists alike, Basswood/Maple body and Maple neck/fretboard combo provides the ideal balance between warmth with full-bodied richness and strong high-midrange with sweet singing treble.

The new .strandberg* OEM pickups were designed and wound to our exacting specifications to deliver a wide range of great sounds from vintage clean to over-the-top high-gain distortion. The figured Maple veneers ensure a stunning look while the solid Maple top underneath works in conjunction with the body back wood to add brilliance, tightness and punch. Overall, the Standard Series guitars are no-compromise instruments you can count on to deliver the performance you expect from a .strandberg*.

During the course of manufacturing of this guitar model, the color of the roasted maple has varied to some degree. The wood is roasted to achieve the desired properties (tonal response and dimensional stability in different weather conditions) and not to a certain color. This means that the color sometimes does not match that of the product photos, which were taken of the first produced sample guitars. We are working on a revised process and acquiring new equipment for roasting maple that will give us greater control of the results, which should be in place in early 2021. Until then, if you have any concerns about the color of the roasted maple neck or fretboard before ordering, please reach out to us through the contact form at the bottom of this page, and we will be happy to send you a photo in advance, or talk you through the process. This guitar makes some notable innovations. Maybe it's not important to everyone, but I love that the back plate looks designed, rather than like an afterthought. The instrument is beautiful from every angle. To me, the neck profile is very natural feeling, I barely noticed except that I seem to apply pressure more evenly as I move up the neck. I got used to the fanned frets in 2-3 days. Another notable feature is the light weight, it wont hurt my back during long play sessions. Some possible drawbacks: The sharp string ends are more exposed than on most guitars. The custom hardware is beautifully designed but might need some slight refinement to make it perfect. Overall a great instrument. I would highly recommend it.

Everything it claimed to be!

This guitar checked all the boxes for playability, tone, weight and beauty. The neck carve is an amazing advance in ergonomics following the natural arc of the forearm and hand as you move up the neck. When you couple that neck with fanned jumbo frets the result is a transformation from reaching and forcing your hand to find a chord to finding it just under your fingertips. I will be buying more of these guitars

Temptation yields to reality. It's me - not you.

First, some perspective. I build custom acoustic archtop guitars, mandolins and an occasional Viol da gamba as a side project, so my review comes from the perspective of crafting instruments that take 100 - 150 hours each and need a practiced level of attention to create appreciable voice. Out of interest, I dived into a Boden Original 8 string refurbished model. The thought that has gone into every aspect of the design, tonal qualities and playability appealed to my understanding and appreciation of the craft. It arrived in pristine condition. No flaws, setup was dead on. Fret work was amazing! I spent a few days gaining some familiarity with the addition of the 2 lower strings and wider neck width - but struggled. My reference point has always been traditional neck design and orientation. I have a Gibson ES 330 which is my framework and benchmark to guitar ergonomics. The Boden 8 threw me. I could not jump back and forth between them. I came to the realization I'm simply not that versatile. It's me - not you. I reached out to the Boden team and presented my problem asking to return. No hesitation, no questions. They were immediate and prompt. Undeterred and still inspired, that very same day, I ordered a Boden Standard 6 (Maple Quilt, Bengal Burst). It arrived and I aligned with the neck design, tone, playability, fit/finish and details of every aspect. No problems switching between the traditional neck and the Boden neck, and I can see that it will help in training better fingering techniques. Important to note, the majority of media for reference is heavy metal. My focus is jazz, neo-soul, blues, and music where a distorted or heavy overdrive sound is not the intent. The overall build of the Boden is very well suited for clean voicings. I find the construction does produce a well sustained tone and pure voice - as opposed to guitars that rely on effects or processing to manufacture a sound pallet that is not innately there. I know in the future I will expand to include a Boden 8 to my musical resources - but for now, I'll keep a humble appreciation for the Boden 6 and see where it takes me.

Thanks for the thoughtful review, Todd. 8-string is definitely a leap, and a different beast entirely from a conventional guitar. Awesome to hear that you are finding the 6-string works for you! /Ola

Beautiful Instrument - Perfect Fit!

I was not planning on buying a guitar, but a good friend recently purchased a Strandberg bass and recommended me getting a Strandberg guitar for the ergonomic benefit. Very happy I did! It plays beautifully, is sturdy and well-made. The angle of the frets and the shape of the body is a welcome change in guitar design. Aesthetically, the maple quilt bengal burst is very appealing. The location of the five-way switch took a little getting used to, but I have adapted. I have a some difficulty with the tuning gears being hard to turn, but it definitely stays in tune. Overall, very satisfied with my purchase. I've definitely bonded with this instrument. Highly recommend!

Versatile Body Shape

The body shape provides multiple seated playing positions for maximum comfort and versatility.

Scale Lengths Adapted to You

A multi-scale design allows your wrist to remain relaxed throughout the range of play. A longer scale length for the heavier strings provide better tone, and shorter in the thinner strings better playability.

EndrureNeck strandberg guitar

Patented Neck Profile

Our patented EndurNeck™ profile promotes a more correct playing position. The result: you can play longer, faster, better and avoid injury.

Space Age Materials

Our hunt for great tone and low weight led us to using aircraft grade aluminium and carbon fiber for maximum performance.

Proprietary Hardware

The custom .strandberg* hardware is a vital contributor to the tone of the instrument. Lightweight aircraft grade aluminium and tight coupling of components ensure that nothing prevents the strings' vibrations from entering the body.
