Socrates Garcia is a Dominican-American guitarist, composer, producer, arranger, and educator whose music symbiotically blends Afro-Caribbean traditions, jazz, progressive music, cinematic writing, and modern production. Garcia’s musical journey began in the Dominican Republic, where he was introduced to music through classic rock and heavy metal bands such as Kiss, Iron Maiden, and the early thrash metal movement. He later became a member of Hekaton, one of the most revered early thrash metal bands in the Dominican scene, an experience that continues to shape the energy, rhythmic intensity, and guitar-driven character of his music today.
Over the years, he has performed and worked in the studio with many of the Dominican Republic’s most iconic artists while developing a distinctive artistic voice that merges Dominican rhythms with contemporary jazz harmony, progressive textures, and cinematic scope. His collaborations include Grammy-winning and chart-topping productions such as Yo Por Ti by Olga Tañón and Tesoros de Mi Tierra by Milly Quezada, in addition to his own acclaimed projects with the Socrates Garcia Latin Jazz Orchestra, including Back Home and Shadows of Tomorrow. Both of the SGLJO albums received national and international recognition including the Global Music Awards, earning a Gold Medal for Back Home and a Silver Medal for Shadows of Tomorrow.
Alongside his work as a performer and producer, Garcia is also active as a film composer, bringing together orchestral writing, hybrid production techniques, world music influences, and modern guitar textures to create emotionally driven cinematic scores.
As founder and director of the Socrates Garcia Latin Jazz Orchestra, Socrates has earned recognition for creating music that is both deeply rooted and stylistically fearless. Reviewers have described his work as “energetic, charming, sensory, and revealing,” while also praising “the brilliance of the compositions and arrangements” of his music. One review simply stated: “Merengue never sounded so good.”
In addition to his artistic career, Socrates holds both master’s and doctoral degrees in jazz composition and serves as Professor of Music and Director of Music Technology at the University of Northern Colorado, where he teaches recording, production, composition, and music technology while mentoring the next generation of musicians, composers, and producers.
“Few musicians have shaped my artistic development the way Socrates García has. From studying jazz harmony with him many years ago, to performing in his orchestra, conducting his compositions, collaborating in workshops and studio sessions, I’ve witnessed an artist constantly pushing boundaries while remaining deeply connected to his Dominican roots. His voice as a guitarist is modern, fearless, and deeply personal, exactly the kind of artistry that resonates with the Strandberg philosophy.”

I honestly didn’t expect a guitar to make such a big difference until I played my first Strandberg. I had spent my whole life physically adapting to guitars, the weight, shoulder tension, wrist angle, long rehearsals, long studio sessions. I just thought that was part of being a guitarist. Then in 2017, I got the Boden Original and everything suddenly felt easier and more natural.
What really got me was how comfortable the instrument felt without losing any personality or power. Coming from heavy metal and progressive music, I still need a guitar that can handle aggressive playing, but my career also moved into jazz writing, Latin music, recording sessions, production, and film-oriented textures. My Strandbergs always feel at home in all those situations.
These days, my Blue Prog is the one I typically reach for. Whether I’m composing, recording, teaching, or performing, it just feels like an extension of me instead of something I have to fight against physically. That’s probably the biggest compliment I can give any instrument.
